Embedding Justice:
New Frameworks of Social and Climate Justice in Contemporary Political Theory
The Mid Conference Reimagining Justice in the 21st Century: Normativity, Politics, and Society is organized in partnership with the Project “Embedding Justice: New Frameworks of Social and Climate Justice in Contemporary Political Theory” (FAPESP Grant no. 2025/09557-5), Brazil.
The project addresses, from the perspective of political theory, some urgent normative challenges posed by extreme economic inequality, climate injustice, and the persistence of social hierarchies, aiming to rearticulate justice beyond conventional distributive paradigms. It advances a framework of embedded justice through three dimensions:
(i) social embeddedness, which situates equality in relational structures rather than abstract distributive metrics;
(ii) historical embeddedness, which integrates egalitarian thought with the political traditions of democratic socialism, feminism, and Black political theory; and
(iii) intergenerational embeddedness, which extends justice across temporal horizons, particularly in the context of climate change and structural historical injustices.
As part of the Justice in the XXI Century: A Perspective from Latin America (JUSTLA) consortium, this project contributes to a transnational effort to rethink justice from a Latin American perspective, engaging with both theoretical innovation and the concrete struggles of social movements, thereby forging new connections between normative theory and political agency.
